ARRIVAL
Your journey begins with a charter from Anchorage, landing on the beach at the Alaska Homestead Lodge. On clear days, the views are incredible, with active volcanoes, Mt. Redoubt, Mt. Iliamna, and Mt. Augustine gracing the horizon along the Aleutian Range.

INCREDIBLE BEAR VIEWING
Imagine watching powerful coastal brown bears fish in the nearby creek or dig for clams along the tidal flats. Sows with their adorable cubs will warm your heart, while energetic young bears roughhouse and play right before your lens. With the guidance of expert trackers, we’ll travel by ATV and custom trailers to access the best locations. From there, short walks will bring us safely and respectfully close to these incredible animals, setting the stage for unforgettable moments and perfect photographs.

After a day of exploring, we will relax at the cozy Alaska Homestead Lodge, where rustic charm meets modern comfort. We will enjoy home-cooked meals made with fresh ingredients from the garden, including grilled salmon, homemade breads, and delicious desserts. With spectacular views, you might even spot bears right from your room, making every day an experience.

COMMITTED TO CONVERSATION
For me, photographing wildlife isn’t just about getting an amazing shot, it’s about respecting and protecting the animals and their environment. Nature has given me so much, and I feel a deep responsibility to give back. That’s why I only work with guides and lodges that prioritize conservation and responsible travel, ensuring that every experience is both ethical and sustainable.

These workshops are about more than photography; they’re about making a difference. Every time we step into the wild, we have an opportunity to support local communities, preserve fragile ecosystems, and leave a place better than we found it. Beyond sharpening your skills behind the lens, this experience will inspire you to use your photography as a force for good, helping to protect the beauty of our planet for generations to come.

WHY THIS ADVENTURE?
This intimate workshop is for wildlife lovers who love photography and want more than just a trip; it’s a chance to immerse yourself in nature, sharpen your skills, and create images you’ll treasure forever. From the thrill of photographing bears in action to the peaceful moments surrounded by Alaska’s pristine beauty, this journey will inspire you and forever change your perspective.

Throughout the workshop, you'll have the opportunity to:
  • Hone your skills with hands on, personalized instruction from me, a lifelong seasoned professional photographer, and Canon Explorer of Light.
  • Review and critique images during afternoon breaks.
  • Getting the proper exposure: fundamental principles, controlling highlights, exposing correctly, and evaluating and adjusting the histogram.
  • Experience the breathtaking landscape, wildlife, sunrises, sunsets, and starry night sky illuminating the Alaskan wilderness.
  • Connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for nature and photography.
  • Gain invaluable insights into these fascinating animals' behavior, habitat, and conservation efforts.
  • Hand holding and tripod techniques for sharp, steady images.
  • Understanding what wind direction has to do with (and how it impacts) bird photography and, when possible, being at the sun angle.
  • Post-processing and workflow using Photo Mechanic and Adobe Lightroom Classic.

Ready to make your dream adventure a reality? Join me in Alaska for an unforgettable experience. Spots are limited, so secure yours today!

CAMERA EQUIPMENT
Get ready to capture Alaska like never before! While iPhones can grab some amazing photos, the real magic happens with a telephoto lens of at least 300mm or, even better, a 100-500mm zoom. With bears often close enough to feel their presence, you’ll want the right gear to do justice to these incredible moments.

Don’t stop there! Bring extra memory cards, batteries, and a backup camera, which you’ll need for all the action and scenery. The Alaskan wilderness is stunning, so pack a medium focal length and wide angle lens to capture the full scope of its dramatic beauty.

Rain gear is essential for your equipment; it’s Alaska, after all. For flexibility, consider a monopod or the game-changing Platypod. It’s a perfect alternative to a tripod, giving you a stable base for long exposures and even night sky photography under Alaska’s brilliant stars.

Pack smart, gear up, and prepare for a photography adventure you’ll never forget!
