I've had the privilege of working with Bob Davis across many photography expeditions, from capturing Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge to photographing the Big 5 in Kenya. My husband and I took a trip to Africa on a safari. This was the first time for us and it was the best trip we’ve ever experienced. Through Bob and Dawn Davis, whom we were introduced by a friend, we took a trip to Botswana South Africa. We were there April 2019 for approximately 10 days. My husband and I both love wildlife. This experience is one that we will talk about for years. Bob and Dawn set up a perfect trip for us, as well as all the wonderful people we were introduced to. We are friends with many of them including Bob and Dawn. Bob is an amazing and extremely talented photographer. My husband loves photography so this was perfect for him. I love animals in the wild. What we both experienced was beyond our dreams. We are talking about going back in the near future but only with Bob and Dawn. We definitely without, a doubt recommend this trip of a lifetime.

Dearest Bob and Dawn!

First of all, I was so honored to be welcomed on your inaugural South African Safari back in 2014.

Never had I been on a safari OR traveled to South Africa so THIS trip was most profoundly the trip of MY lifetime!
Post divorce, I was certainly anxious but what kept playing over and over in my mind was “who the heck am I traveling that far, on my own, with mostly strangers, on SAFARI no less!

But what I soon discovered, through your gentle nudges, a private facebook page, and my growing confidence was that I was in tremendously more than capable hands. I’ll add that I could assume that landing and gathering with other photographers at varying levels, I would hit the ground running and already feel that common bond. And that’s exactly what happened.

All the worries melted away, I joined all the attendees outside the airport and conversations filled the air as we hopped on our shuttle. I may have cried.

This trip, albeit their inaugural Safari, felt like Bob and Dawn had been doing this for years! The classes, the meals, the game drives in the morning and even were both enlightening and magical. The camaraderie thickened with each sunrise and every sunset.

And the MEALS!? World Class! Even as to the snacks and “Sundowners”, Bob and Dawn communicated to the lodge that I was a vegan and they were so careful to make sure they researched Vegan dishes for me, including bringing out to fire pit, a Vegan birthday cake on our last night! At times, some of the attendees would ask it they could have what I was having!

Game drives were amazing and left me in awe of these magnificent creatures of God. Getting up close and photographing them in their natural habitat a world away from my day to day life was and experience I’d never had or even perhaps could possibly duplicate.

I think I particularly loved the night drives the most, watching the sunset on this vast land and photographing silhouettes of both vegetation and the BIG 5 leaves you with a feeling of how small we all are. Especially when our driver hit the light and we sat there under the Milky Way. The silence. The dark. The camera clicks. I was right where I was supposed to be!

Glamping, Classes, Editing in our “Tents”, 2 Game drives each day, Meals and provisions at every turn, Monkeys that would swoop in and steal croissants, the chocolates on the pillow of my warm, glowing turned down bed complete with a little card telling a sweet story of one of the native creatures…I could go on for days!

Truly, an adventure that leaves you wanting for nothing because they thought of everything!

Thank you Bob and Dawn Davis for allowing me to join you on this magnificent trip that left me feeling loved, breathless, inspired and confident that I could travel solo and be safe and cared for!

The safari was a wonderful opportunity to spend time with other creatives in an incredible setting. The trip itself was a once in a lifetime experience that I'm so glad I was able to be a part of. Obviously the wildlife drives were amazing and I think the sunset (what did they call them?!) were a highlight for all of us. It was also just nice to have down time to chat about photography with others in the field and learn from Bob and Dawn. I highly recommend this trip to other photographers!

It's hard for me to put into words the impact attending this workshop had on me as both a photographer and a person. Sure, there were the technical things I learned that I really had little knowledge of going into the workshop, including extensive knowledge of my flash, off-camera lighting, using flashes as slaves and masters, etc. Then there was learning Bob's master approach to shooting a wedding, evaluating lighting, and gleaning from his creativity. Then there were also the insights I gained from Dawn about post-processing, marketing techniques, and workflow. All of this information was and continues to be invaluable.

However, more than all the things that I learned, the workshop ignited my passion and vision for my photography in a way that I had never quite tapped into before. Looking back it's hard to believe that all this was accomplished in just a two-day workshop. But I think that this speaks so much to who Bob and Dawn are as people. Their vibrant passion for their work, as well as their excitement to share their knowledge and passion with others was incredibly contagious. Not only this but their genuine care for each of us attendees was so evident. I came expecting to learn about photography but didn't expect the relationships that would develop in the process.

I've run into photographers in the past who have kept all their secrets to themselves. At one point, I even asked Dawn, what do you get out of this? because when all is said and done I realized they can't be making much money putting something like this on. She responded, It gives us opportunities like this to be sitting here with people like you. That blew me away! Here are people who have "made it" in the photography business and yet they care to share what they know and who they are with less seasoned photographers like myself. Their desire to give back generously out of what they've been generously given is also seen in the ways they donate their talents to non-profit organizations. So through this workshop, I've been inspired in ways professionally that I have never experienced in my photography. Ive been challenged to live generously out of what's been given to me. And I've learned many invaluable tools, techniques, and approaches that will continue to pay dividends in my photography.

I returned home from the workshop at a crossroads. I am about to enter my last year of a psychology graduate program, but what was I supposed to do with this new vibrant passion and vision for my photography. After much deliberating, I've decided to delay graduation by a year to provide the time needed to invest in my photography dreams. I couldn't rationalize neglecting the momentum and vision this workshop provided. If choosing to endure an extra year of grad school isn't a testament to the invaluable investment of the workshop, I don't know what is! I've shot two weddings since the workshop and its amazing to see the difference in my photography before attending and after. Thank you Bob and Dawn for all that you generously gave and for who you are!

MY FRIEND, MY MENTOR. Before meeting Bob Davis, I'll be honest, I didn't know how to feel about a photographer who was named a celebrity photojournalist. What was that supposed to mean? Paparazzi? I'm a HARD sell & I'm not caught up in the who-ha of this industry of THE ROCKSTAR PHOTOGS as a matter of fact, I shy away from it BUT I attended one of his classes at WPPI in 2006 & then here in my area of Baltimore/DC when he was here on tour. At one point he was describing his photo shoot during the Oprah car giveaway. I will never forget how he lit up with such enthusiasm as he described what it felt like to photograph these shrieking hysterically happy women receiving their gifts. THERE I OBSERVED IT. This guy is REAL. This man LOVES the art of photography. Then I attended Vegas Love Story Workshop. Since then, our families formed a close relationship. 

It wasn't until the first time I second shot a wedding for Bob last summer that I had some "a-ha" moments. After the wedding, as my files were being downloaded, oh boy, can I just say how many shots I screwed up. Bob, Dawn and I stayed up very late talking and I was humbled. I felt discouraged, not because of the constructive criticism I was receiving from my friends, but because of my lack of focus. Bob drove me to the airport the next day & talked to me & reminded about the gift that God has given me. Well, this is when I self appointed him as my mentor.

For the first time in my life I actually cared about what being a student is really about. He told me, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. and yes, it sank in and I try my best to PRACTICE as much as I can. I listened. Not as a friend but as a student. For me, having a mentor is not about trying to impress. It's about patience, listening, & implementing what I'm being taught. It's about RESPECT. My friend, my mentor who LOVES to teach, continues to be a student himself and shares his knowledge with integrity. And me, now a student at the ripe YOUNG age of 37 and enjoying it WOW. I can't believe I used the words enjoy and student in the same sentence!

Behind Bob stands a FANTASTIC Dawn. There is a reason they are named Davis Love Story. I never realized how much work goes into a workshop until helping my friends out. ESPECIALLY all the DETAILS & heart Dawn puts into each individual workshop. Not only do the attendees benefit from her marketing, Photoshop & album design skills but they walked away with a few goodies from each bow tied, jellybean, thank u card, etc. I'd have to say the vision boards are an AMAZING gift to receive.

I suppose I could be dubbed as bias because I have become friends with Bob and Dawn. The truth is this: If I did not BELIEVE in what they are doing, I would just nod and smile and not really say too much one way or another. I'm honest, sometimes brutally so.

I trust in what they are doing and I am extremely proud in the direction they are heading. Working as a TEAM Bob & Dawn are a strong force. I have attended their workshops not only as an attendee but most recently helping as an assistant. As a new photographer to the industry, I've been very timid about asking the seasoned pros for help. Therefore, most of what I learned in the beginning is from studying online photography forums, books, and workshop DVDs. As my very first live workshop, I didn't know what to expect from the Davis Love Story Workshop. But I immediately realized how refreshing it was to have Bob and Dawn in front of me, where they would answer all of my questions using their years of experience and knowledge. In addition to the sharing of technical knowledge, I found that seeing Bob at work, from posing the models to capturing the shot, was incredibly inspiring! As for Dawn, she was so sweet and she presented the materials in such an enjoyable and interesting way! She encouraged us to seek her help even after the workshop and when I called her with a list of questions, she was still so eager to share her knowledge and she made me feel so comfortable to ask away! I am very pleased with the workshop and enjoy incorporating so much of what I learned into my business!

What can be said that has not been said already? Awesome workshop with good information, cool models to work with, lots of interaction and was just a great time. I've attended workshops where the photographer just stands around watching and those just aren't as useful.

But, more important than all of that was the fact that Bob and Dawn are still around after the workshop! They don't just fade into the distance but continue to be there for us. I believe in giving in abundance when you get something from me and it is so refreshing to see that Bob and Dawn literally live that philosophy. I expected quite a bit from days out in Maryland and they gave so, so much more than I ever anticipated! Thank you, thank you!

A final note, all the photographers at the workshop are also in a class all their own and I can say that I have formed connections that will last in my career. Bob and Dawn lead the charge up a hill and each participant made sure everyone else made it up the hill, that in itself was inspirational.

 The Vegas Love Story workshop did so much for me, I don't even know where to begin. I learned so much from Bob, from Dawn, and from the other workshop attendees that it completely turned around my professional career. I met with you both almost a year ago in Minneapolis for the TCPPA, and I can honestly say it changed my business and how I view myself as a photographer! I checked out the DVD this morning and I was floored. The Davis Impact DVD is informative and instills passion into the viewer to become a better light seeker. Bob's knowledge of photography and his passion for capturing the story is really highlighted in the DVD and now Bob is my photography hero. Floored! Even though the DVD is all about Bob, I want to share with you that Dawn is my HERO too. Executive producer Dawn Davis should create a DVD too. Love it!

WHAT a weekend!!! It was my privilege and pleasure to have the chance to spend the weekend hanging out and shooting with Bob Davis in Virginia! It was not only a ton of fun but the most enlightening shoot Ive ever been on. (Bad pun intended) =) I really don't have anything to add to an off camera remote flash sort of email because until this weekend I never understood how to do it. Bob changed that last night, he took the time to explain what he knows and how he does what he does in a way that I could understand and by the end of the night I was rockin' the house with off camera strobes using Ratios and ETTL. If you had told me that I would get it by the end of the night I'd have laughed but Bob stuck with me and made it make sense!! It was like a 1:1 flash seminar with the master.I would have paid to go on that shoot with him!
